Bessie Coleman (January 26, 1892 – April 30, 1926) is the first woman of African-American and Native American descent to have a pilot license. In 1921, she acquired her international pilot license. Even though she dreamed of becoming a pilot, there was no opportunity for both Native Americans and African-Americans to enter a flying school. She persevered and saved money in order to achieve her dream of flying. She went to France and studied to become a pilot. She came back to the United States and became a successful air show pilot. When she was 34 years old, the new plane that she was testing crashed that resulted in her death.
